Gary and Loretta opened up their home in 2017 and have fully embraced their role as HSC foster carers since.
They have three older children, are young grandparents and have a young daughter. The couple currently have a young man living with them who is now over 18 years and has become part of their family. He was with them from a younger age and he integrated so well that he has remained on as a young adult. They also offer short breaks to other children who regularly stay with them for the weekend or longer on holiday periods.
Fostering has been flexible to fit round the demands and commitments of their lives and tailored to suit what the family can offer.
As a very active couple, they decided that they could combine their love of activity and sport with fostering. They are fortunate to live in the Mourne Mountains and currently enjoy walking, wild swimming, Gaelic football and paddle-boarding. They have found that young people who have stayed with them have thoroughly enjoyed joining in with some of the activities.
“Fostering has definitely enhanced the lives of our own children. We would urge anyone who has ever thought about fostering to make that initial phone call – you won’t regret it!!” says Gary.
