Rosie* is a gentle and affectionate little girl with beautiful short, fair, curly hair and a sweet smile.
Rosie is significantly developmentally delayed. Despite being 3 years old, she does not crawl or walk, although she can sit upright for short periods and enjoys rolling on the floor. Rosie follows a programme with exercises designed to encourage her mobility and muscle strength. Rosie is also delayed in her language and speech, her growth and her cognitive ability.
Rosie has a diagnosis of Methylmalonic Academia (MMA), a rare inherited metabolic disorder that affects her body’s ability to break down certain proteins and fats. As a result of her condition, Rosie is fed via a PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) feeding tube which supplies nutrition directly to her stomach. Her foster carer will be provided with full training to safely prepare and administer her feeds and manage her equipment confidently.
Rosie enjoys sensory play and toys that light up or make sounds, which capture her attention and bring her joy. Rosie responds positively to calm, nurturing interactions from familiar carers. She reciprocates comfort and engagement through smiles, sounds and gestures.
Rosie has been raised in a loving and nurturing home environment with her family. The plan for foster care arises due to concerns about her weight loss and the need for close monitoring of her medical and feeding needs. Because of her weight loss, she has spent periods of time in and out of hospital. Her most recent admission was at the beginning of August; since then, she has made great progress and is now healthy and ready to leave hospital, but she needs the right foster home to help her keep making progress.
Rosie requires carers who are available full-time and able to provide consistent, round-the-clock care to meet her feeding schedule and adapt to her sleeping pattern, as she can be unsettled during the night and wake several times. Rosie is used to being around other children and enjoys their company, so a household with calm, understanding children could be positive for her.
While this is a full-time caring role, carers will receive some respite when Rosie is at school and during her family time sessions.
Rosie will benefit from carers who can provide patience, stability and skilled care to meet her complex health needs while maintaining the loving, affectionate environment she is familiar with.
A financial package will be provided to Rosie’s foster carer(s) in recognition of the required level of commitment in addition to fostering allowances.
