Could you foster James (7)?

30th April 2025

We are looking for long-term foster carer/s for James* within the Northern area, preferably in the Mid-Ulster area.

James* is a very endearing seven year old boy with a lovely smile; he is a bright child who loves to have fun and jokes. James is of average weight and height; he has a dark complexion and lovely brown eyes and dark hair. James enjoys activities such as jigsaws and other building activities. He has great concentration for Lego, playdough and jigsaws. He can sit for over an hour with an adult and focus really well on what he is making, following picture instructions with little or no help. He also enjoys the park and swimming and is good with his reading

James has a diagnosis of ASD and moderate/severe learning disability and attends a special school.

James enjoys a good healthy diet and also loves a treat like KFC or McDonald’s. James thrives on routine and has good routines in place. He has a good bedtime routine and sleeps all night. James can independently go to the toilet, though he does need some assistance with other personal care. James is able to follow direction and likes to have things explained to him at a level he can understand.

James thrives on one-to-one attention and needs adult supervision when out and about, he is starting to show danger awareness and will follow instruction to stay with an adult and hold hands. James is able to voice his needs and wants. He is very chatty and likes to ask questions, and his language and communication skills are improving with an increased vocabulary.

James has had difficult experiences in his life, which he continues to process. This requires reassurance and patience to help him process these feelings and worries.

James would be best suited living with one or two foster carers. It would be beneficial for James to be the only child to have the attention he needs or in a family where there is an older child who would be understanding of James needing individual attention. James would need to have a carer who is available during the day to help meet his needs and during school holidays.

James does have contact with his birth family. He currently has monthly contact with his siblings, which is community based and supervised by his and his sibling’s respective carers. James has weekly supervised contact with his mum and dad in the local community supervised by social workers.

James’ foster carer/s will receive ongoing support from social services and receive the fostering allowance fee.
