Aron* has just turned ten years old. He has blonde hair, sallow skin, dark brown eyes and a beautiful big smile. He is described as a lovely, friendly and affectionate boy. Adults who know Aron say that he has a great sense of humour. He is bubbly, smiley and loves to chat, sing and do silly dances to make people laugh.

Aron is generally in good physical health; he has a diagnosis of asthma but he has not needed to use an inhaler. Aron is slim and tall for his age. His diet can be limited as he does not like to eat vegetables, but he loves pepperoni pizza, spaghetti bolognaise, scrambled eggs and yoghurts.

At bedtime, Aron loves to read 3 or 4 books or watch his DVD player. His sleep can be disrupted and he can wake at midnight and early in the morning. He loves Lego, the cinema, and enjoys being outdoors on the trampoline, on his scooter or go-kart, climbing, fishing and swimming – he really enjoyed bodyboarding in Roscor recently.

Aron had been living on a farm until recently and he helped to feed the chickens and goats. He is a sociable young boy – attending summer clubs and engaging in Arts & Crafts, football and bushcraft skills.

Aron has a diagnosis of ADHD and is under review from Paediatrics. He has been prescribed medication to support the management of symptoms. When this medicine is adhered to, an improvement is seen in Aron’s ability to manage day-to-day activities, particularly in school.

In terms of personal care, Aron needs support and encouragement to brush his teeth. He can be slow to dress and this can sometimes lead to him being dysregulated.

When Aron is distressed, he can display heightened emotions and be reluctant to follow daily routines such as refusing to go to bed or take his medication. Additional support is being explored via Occupational Therapy, however strategies in place that help Aron to self-regulate include physical activities such as push/pull movements, eating crunchy foods, sucking from sports bottles/having thick drinks, and ensuring Aron takes time in his bedroom to calm. A weighted blanket helps to support Aron’s sleep. Aron has used cushions in the past to make a den, giving him space to relax and engage in creative play.

Aron is in Primary 6 in mainstream school. Aron loves school and he has been afforded consistency in his education in an environment where the teachers and school staff know him well. Support is afforded to Aron given his Statement of Educational Needs to support his emotional wellbeing. He is intelligent and doing well academically.

Aron can struggle to read social cues so there can be issues in peer relationships at times but school report he has a lot of friends.

Aron has family time with his mum once per month. His younger siblings are also art of this contact. Aron also has fortnightly contact with his brother.

Aron needs carers who can understand the impact of his adverse childhood experiences, numerous placement moves, and his diagnosis of neurodiversity.

Foster carers will have support from involved professionals, to incorporate recommended strategies to support Aron to develop self-regulation skills, manage his self-care, and to feel safe and secure in his new foster home.

Aron is an affectionate young boy who needs the chance to feel safe, settled, and cared for. With nurturing care, consistency, and warmth, we have seen Aron thrive and flourish. We are looking for carers who are nurturing, consistent and therapeutic in approach.

As Aron’s foster carers you will receive:

• Full training in all aspects of being a foster carer.
• Specialist training in Trauma and Attachment and other relevant areas to help understand Aron’s specific developmental needs.
• Advice, guidance and support from the key professionals including therapeutic input from the Safe Connections team.
• Fostering allowances plus an additional fee per annum to reflect his needs.
• Support from your supervising social worker from the Therapeutic Fostering team as well as Aron’s social worker.
• An opportunity to be part of a foster carer support group where you can meet with other carers and share experiences.
