Could you foster Willow (9)?

13th August 2025

Willow* is an outgoing and sociable child who enjoys spending time with her peers, often staying outside to play until she becomes hungry. However, she is also a child who values her own space and is equally content in her own company. She will sometimes choose to spend time relaxing in her room, particularly when she feels the need to unwind or take a break.

Unfortunately, Willow’s mother experienced a difficult childhood, which contributed to her involvement in inappropriate relationships and poor lifestyle choices. These challenges sadly affected her ability to provide safe and consistent care for Willow and her siblings, ultimately impacting on her capacity to meet their needs, which led to their placement in foster care.

Although Willow has had to live outside of the family home and apart from her brothers, she has benefited from the stability, consistency and sense of belonging that has come from remaining with the same foster family throughout her time in care. This continuity has supported the development of secure and trusting relationships with her foster parents and has contributed to her positive sense of self and emotional wellbeing; all of which is essential for healthy development.

This is evident in Willow’s confidence to engage in a range of artistic talents, from performing arts such as dancing and drama to creating visual pieces using various materials, drawing or using sketch art apps on her iPad. Attending her local drama group has further supported the development of her social skills and helped to build upon her confidence and self-esteem. Like many children her age, Willow enjoys visits to the trampoline park, swimming pool or simply spending time at the local park. Within the home Willow enjoys quality time with her carers, whether it’s chatting, watching movies together or playing games such as UNO or Guess Who.

Willow is described by her foster carer as having typically ‘girly’ traits with a strong interest in fashion and personal style. She enjoys dressing up for special occasions in a nice dress but is equally comfortable in more casual attire, such as her shorts, football jersey or favourite tracksuit bottoms. Willow also takes pleasure in using lip gloss, having her nails painted and she has recently begun experimenting with skincare products, showing a growing interest in self-care and personal appearance.

Willow has established a varied diet and is generally open to trying a range of food from traditional Sunday roast to pasta dishes and even salads, often including her favourite addition of three boiled eggs. She enjoys trying new meals and particularly looks forward to French toast and bacon for breakfast on the weekends. However, like many children, she can be reluctant to eat her vegetables, with sweetcorn being the exception.

Willow loves school and she is looking forward to starting Primary 6 in September. She is known for her kind nature, thoughtfulness and good behaviour and she is often seen as a positive role model among her peers. Willow’s teachers report that she has made good progress this year particularly in literacy and numeracy and has show a hard-working attitude across various subjects. Whilst Willow can find written comprehension tasks challenging sometimes, she responds well to prompts from her carer and her writing skills are continuing to improve with practice. Willow’s motivation is evident, she has a personal record of reading over 30 books during this academic year.

Willow deserves to be loved and valued by a family and to be encouraged to explore and learn from the world around her. Could this be you?

Willow’s foster carer(s) will receive financial support, ongoing social work support, as well as training and development opportunities.
