Children of Foster Carers Week 2026

Children of Foster Carers Week 2026

12th October 2026

HSC NI Foster Care are proud to celebrate Children of Foster Carers Week (12-18 October), as part of The Fostering Network’s annual campaign to recognise the remarkable children who share their home, family and lives with foster children.

While conversations about fostering often focus on adults, children of foster carers play an incredibly important role in helping foster children feel welcome, making them feel included and understood.

Growing up in a fostering household can come with its own set of unique challenges as birth or adopted children learn to share their home, parents’ attention and family life with children who may be facing difficult circumstances. The experience, however, can also teach children and young people the importance of empathy, social awareness and care for others. Many children that grow up in a fostering household go on to work in care professions or even foster themselves.

We understand that many may put off considering fostering until their children have grown up and moved out. Children of Foster Carers Week also highlights the many families across Northern Ireland who are raising children whilst fostering, proving that you can do both.

Your children can benefit greatly from the fostering experience and gain a unique perspective on the world.

Our team will provide dedicated support to help you and your children prepare for becoming a fostering family, offering guidance and reassurance as you navigate the journey together.
